The tobacco endgame concept is a plan using policy approaches for ending the tobacco epidemic, and envisions a tobacco-free future, not just “controlling” tobacco. California has a goal by 2035 to eradicate the commercial tobacco industry’s influence and reduce the harm caused by tobacco products to the health, environment and economic well-being of California’s diverse populations.
At least two (2) jurisdictions in either Sacramento, West Sacramento, Rancho Cordova, or Stockton will adopt and implement a policy that eliminates the sale and distribution of any tobacco products, including emerging nicotine products, not approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for cessation purposes.
In February 2020, Manhattan Beach became the second city in the nation to prohibit the sale of all tobacco products within the city. Along with Beverly Hills, these retail bans went into effect January 1, 2021.
Sacramento has made progress towards the tobacco endgame by prohibiting the sale of flavored tobacco products, creating buffer zones around schools, and requiring retailers to be licensed to sell tobacco in the city. With tobacco endgame policy pathways, Sacramento can create a healthier environment for its residents, free from the harmful effects of tobacco.
Beverly Hills passed (in 2019) what experts say is the most restrictive tobacco ban in the nation, barring the sale of virtually all nicotine products and setting the stage for similar laws in other cities.
