Disposable Vapes Don’t Just Disappear: Protecting Our Homes, Play Areas & Communities
E-cigarettes may be called “disposable,” but they do not simply go away after they are used. They can become dangerous waste in the places where we live, walk, and play.
A recent Truth Initiative article warns that disposable e-cigarettes are adding to a growing amount of electronic waste. Each device can contain plastic, nicotine, chemicals, and a lithium battery. When vapes are thrown in the trash, their batteries can cause fires. When they are tossed on the ground, they can leak toxic chemicals into the environment.
This is an important concern for families living in apartments, condos, and duplexes. Used vapes left near sidewalks, grass, parking lots, and outdoor play areas can create unwanted hazards where children, families, and pets spend time.
Truth Initiative also found that many disposable vape users throw their devices in the regular trash. Some even litter them on the ground.
The SOL Project is working to educate residents and advocate for smoke- and vape-free multi-unit housing in Sacramento County, Elk Grove, and Citrus Heights. Smoke-free living is about more than the air we breathe. It is also about keeping our homes and shared spaces clean, healthy, and safe.
