Healthy Food + Clean Air = A Healthier Future for Our Families
Eating healthy is one of the best ways to take care of yourself and your family. The new Dietary Guidelines for Americans, 2025–2030 encourage people to choose more whole, nutrient-rich foods like fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, dairy, healthy fats, and whole grains while cutting back on highly processed foods, added sugars, and refined carbohydrates. These healthy choices can help your body stay strong and support long-term wellness.
For families living in apartments, condos, townhomes, and other multi-unit housing, healthy living is about more than what is on your plate. The air you breathe matters too. Smoke from cigarettes, e-cigarettes, vapes, cigars, and marijuana can travel through walls, hallways, patios, balconies, and vents. Harmful chemicals from secondhand and thirdhand smoke can also stick to furniture, clothing, carpets, and other surfaces, exposing children, older adults, and people with chronic health conditions. Choosing healthy food and a smoke-free, vape-free home are both important steps toward protecting your family’s health.
The Dietary Guidelines also remind us that following healthy eating habits may help prevent or slow the progression of chronic diseases such as heart disease, obesity, and type 2 diabetes. People living with chronic health conditions should talk with their health care professional about the best eating plan for their needs. The Guidelines also note that some individuals with certain chronic diseases may experience improved health outcomes with a lower-carbohydrate diet when it is recommended by their health care provider.
At The SOL Project, we encourage families throughout Sacramento County, Elk Grove, and Citrus Heights to make healthy choices every day. Nutritious meals, regular physical activity, and living in a smoke-free and vape-free home can work together to build stronger families and healthier communities.
