Corte Madera Leads the Way Toward a Tobacco-Free Future
A small California town is taking a BIG step to protect health!
On September 15, 2026, Corte Madera made history by voting to end the sale of all tobacco and nicotine products in the town. This includes cigarettes, cigars, vapes and other nicotine products. FDA-approved products that help people quit can still be sold. The new law takes effect February 1, 2027.
The law does not make it illegal for adults to use or have these products. It stops stores in Corte Madera from selling them.
The SOL Project: Empowering Communities is advocating for smoke-free multi-unit housing in Elk Grove, Sacramento County and Citrus Heights. At the same time, several SOL Project staff with Advancing Momentum have been tirelessly working in the cities of Sacramento and Stockton to advance efforts to end the sale of tobacco and nicotine products.
We congratulate Corte Madera and other California cities taking bold steps toward ending tobacco sales. These communities are leading by example and working to protect the next generation from nicotine addiction and the dangers of secondhand and thirdhand smoke.
We encourage City Council members and community leaders across California to learn from these efforts and consider what they can do to create healthier, tobacco-free communities.
