Sacramento County Sues Big Tobacco Over Cigarette Filter Pollution
SACRAMENTO, CA — Sacramento County has filed a lawsuit against several major tobacco companies, but this case is not about smoking. Instead, the lawsuit focuses on the environmental damage caused by discarded cigarette filters, which County leaders say are one of the most common forms of litter found in parks, streets, waterways, and public spaces.
According to the lawsuit, cigarette filters are made from plastic that does not easily break down. As the filters wear away, they can release harmful chemicals and tiny plastic particles into the environment. The County is asking tobacco companies to help pay for the costs of cleaning up this waste instead of placing the burden on taxpayers.
