UC Davis Student Jaylen Joyce Joins SOL AM Internship Program
My name is Jaylen Joyce, and I am excited to join Saving Our Legacy: African Americans for Smoke-Free Safe Places – Advancing Momentum (SOL AM) as an intern this quarter. I am currently a student at the University of California, Davis, pursuing my undergraduate studies with a strong interest in public service, law, and community advocacy.
I joined SOL AM because I am passionate about addressing health inequities and standing against systems that disproportionately harm African American communities. Learning about the historical and ongoing targeting of Black communities by the tobacco industry has deepened my commitment to this important work. I believe meaningful change begins with education, awareness, and advocacy that is rooted in truth, empowerment, and community engagement.
Through this internship, I look forward to gaining hands-on experience in public health advocacy, policy, and community outreach. I am excited to contribute to initiatives that raise awareness about tobacco-related harm, support policy efforts, and empower communities throughout Sacramento and Stockton. I am also eager to learn from experienced leaders and gain a deeper understanding of how local advocacy can create lasting systemic change.
Outside of my academic and professional interests, I am passionate about fitness, mentorship, and personal development. I value discipline, leadership, and service, and I strive to carry those values into the work I do within my community.
I am grateful for the opportunity to be part of Saving Our Legacy: African Americans for Smoke-Free Safe Places and look forward to contributing to its mission of protecting, educating, and uplifting our communities.
