Detroit Scores a Win for Smoke-Free Travel
DETROIT, MI — Public health advocates are celebrating a major victory after the Wayne County Airport Authority (WCAA) voted to withdraw its proposal for a cigar lounge inside the McNamara Terminal at Detroit Metropolitan Airport.
The decision came after 22 months of advocacy led by Making It Count, founded by Minou Jones, along with ABD Advocacy Agency LLC and many public health partners. Supporters said stopping the proposal helps protect an estimated 31 million travelers and 81,000 airport employees from harmful secondhand and thirdhand smoke.
Jones praised the decision, saying the airport made “the proper decision” to support a healthier environment for workers and travelers.
News reports said airport leaders cited financial uncertainty following the closure of Spirit Airlines as the reason for canceling the proposal. However, health advocates say strong community support and months of public outreach also played an important role in keeping Detroit Metro Airport smoke-free.
This victory shows how community voices can make a difference in protecting public health and creating cleaner, healthier public spaces for everyone.
