New Evidence Raises Alarm About the Health Risks of Vaping
On July 9, 2025, The New York Times published an article by health writer Dani Blum titled “Just How Harmful Is Vaping? More Evidence Is Emerging.” The article highlights growing scientific concerns over the health impacts of vaping, particularly among youth and young adults.
Recent studies have discovered high levels of heavy metals in many popular nicotine vape products—metals that users inhale directly into their lungs. In addition to these findings, researchers continue to link vaping to long-term cardiovascular and respiratory problems, raising new questions about the safety of e-cigarettes.
Dr. Pamela Ling, Director of the UCSF Center for Tobacco Control Research and Education, warns that newer vaping devices now on the market contain extremely high levels of nicotine, which can have harmful and lasting effects on developing brains. This is especially alarming as vaping remains widely marketed and accessible to youth.
